The Architecture of Happiness

Reflecting recent musings on finding a new home (now postponed to May, long story...), I'm reading The Architecture of Happiness by Alain de Botton.

The idea that buildings speak of the values we wish to live by is fascinating yet unsurprising. The opening lines paint a picture of a house  'a guardian of identity'  providing not only physical but also psychological sanctuary.

In essence, what works of design and architecture talk to us about is the kind of life that would most appropriately unfold within and around them... While keeping us warm... they simultaneously hold out an invitation for us to be specific sorts of people. They speak of visions of happiness.
